The context of the quote is that Marie-Antoinette was informed that the people of Paris were starving because there was no bread in the shops. My context is the Road Safety and Fairness Act, or HB1226 that increases the age from 79 to 87 as the “crumbs” for seniors as Illinois is the only state that requires a driving test for seniors based on age. If passed, Illinois is wasting your money in printing this revision to Rules of the Road by NOT giving seniors the same vehicle driving rights afforded seniors in 49 states.
I’ve a snowbird friend that has given up on this BLUE state of Illinois and now is a resident in one of those 49 states. At the age of 85+, he transferred his Illinois driver’s license to the new state of residency without being tested and the new driver’s license will expire in eight years.
On Jan. 13, 2025, Alexi Giannoulias, wrote that the latest statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) reveal that in 2023, the crash rate for drivers 75 and older is 24.61 per 1,000 drivers, which is lower than every age range of drivers between 16 and 74 years old.
What the super majority Democrats in Illinois are saying to seniors is a “half a loaf is better than no bread” and DON’T complain anymore. Please contact your state legislator at ilga.gov/house/.
