2nd canopy collapses at gas station in Cary

The second canopy collapsed at the Marathon gas station at 8 E. Main St., Cary, pictured on June 6, 2026.

Another canopy at a gas station in Cary has fallen over after the first one collapsed six months ago.

The second collapse happened about 1 a.m. Saturday at the Marathon gas station on East Main Street in Cary Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said. The first canopy collapsed in December from the weight of the snow after it was initially damaged by a severe thunderstorm in August.

Cary firefighters responded to the reported collapse and arrived to find a gas station employee who had already shut down and secured the fuel pumps.

The Cary building department was requested to come to the scene to evaluate the damage. No fire, fuel leak or other hazards were identified, Vucha said.

No vehicles were beneath the canopy at the time of the collapse, and no injuries were reported.

Scattered thunderstorms swept through the area Friday evening. According to the National Weather Service, wind speeds peaked at 20 mph with gusts reaching 30 mph.

Both the village and the company’s insurance company inspected the canopy after last year’s collapse. At the time, they did not find structural integrity issues, but Friday night’s storm caused a “critical failure,” Community Development Director Brian Simmons said.

“There were no structural issues identified previously,” he said.

This time, the fuel pumping stations were not damaged, but remain offline. The pumps still have not been replaced since the first canopy failure. The convenience store at the gas station is still open.

The village continues to work with the property owners on the incident and the possibility of adding new canopies in the future, Simmons said.

Owners of the gas station could not be reached for comment Saturday.
