Review: Metropolis stages ‘perfect’ musical tribute to Sinatra

Under the stars in a three-sided, open tent, there’s magic in the air, and a very appreciative audience. There’s no distinct plot to speak of, but Metropolis’ “My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” is a luscious, spectacular and often passionate revue of 54 songs arranged in medley format that Old Blue Eyes made popular. From his recorded canon of 1,600 songs, you’ll hear everything from “That Old Black Magic” to “New York, New York.” And this revue does not attempt to imitate or impersonate that beloved crooner.

I will confess, I’m a Joe Keefe fan. The man has dedicated five decades to theater in 46 states; he’s currently executive artistic director and director of “My Way,” presented by the Arlington Heights-based Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. And he’s simply done an outstanding job with this show, which was conceived and created by David Grapes and Todd Olson, with original arrangements by Vince di Mura.

It must have been difficult to pin down the living legend that was Sinatra: over 50 years of being the Chairman of the Board, a big band crooner, movie star and member of the infamous Rat Pack. But the revue is elegant, playful, and deals with pivotal moments in the journey of Sinatra’s greatest hits.

Under the musical direction of Kenneth McMullen and with choreography by Jessica Miret Garcia, this sophisticated and seductive ensemble shines. Each performer has a moment of fame, and all on a set showcasing a stylish Jilly’s nightclub designed by Sam Gribben. The ensemble of three women and two men is resplendent in jeweled gowns and tuxes designed by Rachel Parent.

The 50-minute first act has an irresistible medley of songs labeled Favorites, Broadway, Young Love, Cities, Summer, Love and Marriage, and, of course, The Lady is a Tramp. McMullen is at the keyboard, and is accompanied by a very skilled and smooth jazz band composed of Nick Anderson (drums), Scott Bakshis (upright bass) and Miles Tesar (saxophone, flute). The 44 songs that the second act showcases (some I was less familiar with) fall under the medleys of Losers, Big Flirt, Moon, Songs for Survivors and, of course, My Way to end it all. By the way, the cast does go out into the audience, and you are invited to sing along, especially with “New York, New York.”

So let’s talk about that five-member cast. They’re perfect. All are obviously skilled in the languages and nuances of Sinatra. Isabella Andrews, Heidi Kurzejka and Jasmine Lacy Young all would make Sinatra’s “classy dames” list, and, impressively, can they ever belt and dance. They have no problems projecting.

Austin Nelson Jr. is a smooth, easy singer and very lyrical, whereas Michael Metcalf is a strong velvety baritone with an incredible vocal instrument. And thanks to Sarah Putts’ sound design, you won’t miss a word or phrase.

I can’t think of a more perfect way to spend a sultry summer evening.

• Regina Belt-Daniels has been involved with the theater in some capacity since the first grade when she was cast as a rather bossy Mother Goose. She proudly serves on the RCLPC and It’s Showtime Theatre boards.
