McHenry girls basketball rallies late, outlasts Hampshire for FVC win

The McHenry girls basketball team used a fourth-quarter rally to to outlast Hampshire, 49-46, Wednesday night in Fox Valley Conference play in McHenry.

Ashley Wachter, who had a team-high 16 points, made four fourth-quarter free throws to help the Warriors hold on for the win.

Hampshire’s Kelby Bannerman poured in a game-high 31 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

Prairie Ridge 41, Crystal Lake South 39: At Crystal Lake, Prairie Ridge’s Karsen Karlblom scored 19 second-half points and finished with a game-high 26 points for the visitors in an FVC win.

Kree Nunnally and Emily Rich (four 3′s) had 12 points each for the Gators.

Crystal Lake Central 54, Jacobs 25: At Crystal Lake, Paige Keller had a team-high 20 points for the Tigers in FVC play. Nora Ryan added 14 points.

Burlington Central 65, Cary-Grove 37: At Burlington, Elana Wells tossed in 23 points with four assists, and Taylor Charles had 22 points and 11 rebounds in the Rockets’ FVC win.

Emily Lukowski led the Trojans with 18 points. Lauren Passaglia added nine.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fox Valley Conference

Prairie Ridge 54, Crystal Lake South 50: At Crystal Lake, the host Wolves came up with a big third quarter, outscoring the Gators 14-2. as they defeated South in their FVC game.

James Muse led Prairie Ridge with 15 points. Carter Evans added 13 and Mason Loucks scored nine on three 3s.

Cooper LePage led South with 18 points and Isaiah Kirkeeng added nine.

Jacobs 47, Crystal Lake Central 39: At Algonquin, Zach Leahy scored 18 points and the Golden Eagles beat the Tigers in their FVC game.

Jackson Martucci had 12 points and Robert Pennel added 11 for the Eagles.

Alec Zumski led Central with 12 points and Connor Bartesch added 10.

McHenry 65, Hampshire 43: At Hampshire, Matt Gallimore hit four 3s and scored 16 points to lead the Warriors past the Whip-Purs in their FVC game.

Kyle Kaempf scored 11 points for McHenry. David Wachter hit two 3s and scored 10.

Kevin Dela Paz and Adam Ugochukwu scored eight points each to lead Hampshire.

GIRLS BOWLING

McHenry 1.497, Johnsburg 1,412: Brianna May rolled a 356 two-game series for the victorious Warriors, including a 185 in the third and decisive game. Teammate Payton Atawater had a match-best 199 in Game 2.

BOYS SWIMMING

Woodstock 100, McHenry 56: Quentin Crown helped propel Woodstock to victory by winning both the 100-yard freestyle (58.45) and 200 freestyle (2:19.57). Quinn Cynor was victorious in the 200 individual medley (1:55.06) and 100 breaststroke (58.83).

Dominic Nambo took first place in the 100 butterfly (1:20.82) for the Warriors.

Cary-Grove 108, Huntley 61: C-G junior Ben Castro (51.32) edged out teammate Danial Sanahurskyj (51.82) by half a second in the 100-yard fly. Later at the event, Castro also took first in the 100 backstroke with a 55.50.

Huntley’s Luke Hackemack (5:15.25) won a thrilling 500-yard freestyle by just over two seconds against second-place C-G freshman Simon Rupniewski (5:17.71)

LATE TUESDAY

Woodstock North 55, Harvard 35: At Harvard, Justin Ortiz (12 points) was one of three players to reach double figures in scoring for the Thunder in a KRC season-opening win over the Hornets.

Rex White scored 11 points, and Cole Brey tossed in 10 for North (1-0, 1-0). Harvard (0-1, 0-1) was led by Sal Lemus and Allan Flores with seven points apiece. AJ Jimenez had six points on two 3s.
