High school sports roundup for Wednesday, Feb. 17

Johnsburg got its offense rolling with at least 18 points in every quarter during an 81-62 Kishwaukee River Conference win over Woodstock on Wednesday in Johnsburg.

Dylan Schmidt led a balanced attack from the Skyhawks (2-2, 1-2) with 18 points. Ian Boal added 14 points, Joseph Wolff provided 12 points, and Jacob Welch scored eight.

Jack Novelle paced the Blue Streaks (0-3, 0-3 KRC) with 17 points, Jon Mickle had 11 points, and Mateo Alcazar scored nine.

Marengo 60, Harvard 41: At Marengo, the Indians held Harvard to six points in the third quarter to blow open the KRC contest. Marengo led, 23-19, at halftime and increased its lead to 42-25 by the end of the third quarter.

Michael Jennett paced the Indians (3-0, 3-0) with 16 points, Matt Volkening connected on four 3-pointers en route to 14 points, and Mitch Kunde hit three 3s and finished with 11 points.

Austin Kohley topped Harvard (0-3, 0-3) with 16 points, and Lee Galarza provided nine points.

Cary-Grove 68, Marian Central 56: At Cary, the Trojans moved to 3-1 on the season with the nonconference win. Sean Pederson drained four 3s, including three in the first quarter, to finish with 18 points. Drew Sepeczi added 14 points, and Brett Green scored 11.

The Hurricanes fell to 0-4, but they got 28 points from Christian Bentancur and 15 from Luke Giangrego, who also hit four 3s.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marengo 75, Harvard 21: At Harvard, four Indians scored in double digits during the KRC victory.

Jennifer Heinberg connected on three 3-pointers and led all scorers with 21 points. Lilly Johnson also hit three 3s on her way to 15 points. Morgan Coffman added 14 points, and Alexis Kunde scored 12.

Haley Shafer led the Hornets with 11 points, and Emma Ackland had eight points.

Johnsburg 46, Woodstock 32: At Woodstock, Macy Madsen drained four 3-pointers and totaled 23 points as the Skyhawks defeated the Blue Streaks in KRC play. Molly Wetzel added 14 points.

Jania Lejman topped Woodstock with 13 points.

GIRLS BOWLING

Marengo 1,710, Johnsburg, 1,470: At Raymond’s Bowl in Johnsburg, Bethany Christiansen bowled a match-best 535 series to lead the Indians. Grace Wzientek added a 491 series.

Toria Blake led Johnsburg with a 400 series, and Ana Bates rolled a 377 series.

BOYS BOWLING

Marengo 3,387, Johnsburg 3,244: At Raymond’s Bowl in Johnsburg, the Indians pulled out a close win over the Skyhawks.

Tim Scholl had Marengo’s high series with a 622. Alex Wigman rolled a 598 series with a game of 254. Kyle Peters bowled a 586 series, and Chase Vogt was one pin behind.

Kyle Stockwell’s 632 series led Johnsburg, followed by Sean Layton (571) and Landon Banaszynski (570).

St. Charles North 3,413, Huntley 3,183: At Bowl-Hi in Huntley, Chris Welzien paced the Red Raiders with a 659 series, followed by Hayes Porsche (646), Nicholas Zummo (641) and AJ DeBello (622).

BOYS SWIMMING

Woodstock North co-op 82, Jacobs co-op 80: At Woodstock, Quinn Cynor won two individual events and helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a victory in the Thunder’s win.

Cynor won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. He teamed with Marcos Fernandez, Quentin Crown and Gunner Dunnett in the 400 freestyle relay.

Nate Herrera had two individual wins for Jacobs, taking first in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. He also teamed with Alex Sutherland, Martin Nowak and Pavlo Komarov to win the 200 medley relay.

Charlie Mason, Josh Brezinski, Aidan Jost and Sutherland took first in the 200 freestyle relay. Jost (200 freestyle), Nowak (200 individual medley), Brezinski (50 freestyle) and Komarov (500 freestyle) also had individual wins for the Golden Eagles.

Huntley 123, McHenry 47: At McHenry, Max Deutschle took first in the 100 and 200 freestyle races during Huntley’s FVC dual win, while Ben Rocks won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and Kacper Cebula won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Michael Boelens (200 individual medley) and Luke Hackemack (500 freestyle) also had solo wins for the Red Raiders.

Boelens, Luke Vandy, Hackemack and Thomas Koterwski combined to win the 400 freestyle relay, while Boelens, Cebula, Dominic Siwiec and Rocks won the 200 medley relay.

McHenry got a win in the 200 freestyle relay from Kellen Fitzpatrick, Chris Petty, Carter Nieman and Ryan Story.
