Jacobs scores 22 runs in regional softball victory

Jacobs softball started its postseason slate with a resounding bang in a 22-0 Class 4A regional semifinal victory over Elgin on Wednesday in Algonquin.

Abbey Nesnidal and Caitlin Cook threw two no-hit innings apiece in the combined no-hitter with each pitcher striking out five. Nesnidal earned the win and also was 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the way offensively.

Jacobs will take on Cary-Grove in Friday’s regional championship game at home in Algonquin.

McHenry 15, Streamwood 0: At McHenry, the Warriors’ bats were red hot in their Class 4A regional semifinal victory.

Abby Geis led the offense, going 2 for 3 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs in the rout, Kyra Lard was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Emma Stolzman was 2 for 3 with a walk, two doubles and two driven in.

The Warriors advance to take on Grant on Friday at home in McHenry with a regional title on the line.

Huntley 16, Guilford 0: At Huntley, the Red Raiders coasted comfortably to a shutout win and earned a chance at a Class 4A regional championship title.

Huntley will take on Hononegah on Friday in Roscoe in the championship game.

Alden-Hebron 20, Harvest Christian 5 (4 inn.): At Hebron, Abby Wanderer was 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs for the Giants, who advance to Thursday’s Class 1A regional final against Durand. Wanderer pitched all four innings with seven strikeouts.

Jessica Webber was 2 for 2 and drove in one run, while Rhayn Holicz and Curry Geary each had 2 RBIs.

Carmel 13, Prairie Ridge 4: At Mundelein, the Wolves’ season came to an end with a Class 3A regional semifinal loss to Carmel.

Lakes 10, Crystal Lake Central 0: At Lake Villa, the Tigers lost in the semifinal round of a Class 3A regional.

Gainna Carone took the loss for Central and Avery Bechler accounted for the team’s lone hit.

Crystal Lake South 8, Woodstock 2: At Crystal Lake, the Gators kept their season alive with a Class 3A regional semifinal win over Woodstock at home.

Brooke Kuffel led the way at the plate and in the circle for South in the victory, throwing six strong innings to earn the win and socking a solo home run to help her cause. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out 13.

Kennedy Grippo doubled and drove in two runs, Molly Cook was 2 for 3 with two doubles, a walk and two RBIs, and Dana Skorich knocked in two runs, as well.

Kaneland 14, Harvard 1: At Maple Park, the Hornets struggled on both sides of the ball in a season-ending loss to the Knights.

Kerrigan Kotecki, Jillian Cooke and Emma Ackland each singled for Harvard in the loss.

Belvidere 7, Hampshire 1: At Belvidere, the Whip-Purs saw their season end in a Class 3A regional semifinal with a loss on the road.

Richmond-Burton 18, Rockford Christian 0: At Richmond, the Rockets had no trouble in earning a postseason win.

Mia Spohr tossed a one-hit shutout for R-B in the rout, striking out five over four innings of work. Spohr also homered and drove in two RBIs in the blowout, Rachel Baker was 2 for 2 with a homer, two walks, three runs and three RBIs and Carys De Lucia was 2 for 3 with a double, a walk and three RBIs.

The Rockets will take on Marengo on Friday in Richmond with a Class 2A regional title on the line.

Marengo 12, Winnebago 7: At Marengo, Savanna Swanson drove in six runs to lead the way for Marengo in a Class 2A regional semifinal win at home.

Swanson was 2 for 4 with a double en route to her six RBIs, Emily White was 3 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored and Courtney Jasinski homered and drove in two.

Marengo will have a chance at winning a Class 2A regional title Friday in its matchup with R-B in Richmond.

Johnsburg 15, St. Edward 0: At Johnsburg, the Skyhawks got off to an excellent start in postseason play with a rout of St. Edward at home.

The victory advances them to a Class 2A regional final matchup with North Boone on Thursday in Johnsburg.

GIRLS SOCCER

Larkin 5, Huntley 3: At Elgin, the Red Raiders saw their season end in the 3A regional semis in a high-scoring loss to Larkin on the road.

Grace Helzer had two goals and one assist in the loss, Kaitlyn Guyer scored a goal and Gabby Rivera had one assist.

Cary-Grove 9, Rockford East 0: At Cary, the Trojans went off for nine goals in a postseason rout.

Katie Jannusch, Kate Larry and Katelyn Gitzke all scored multiple goals for C-G in the blowout.

The victory sets up a Class 3A regional title match with McHenry on Friday in Cary.

McHenry 4, Guilford 0: At McHenry, the Warriors kept a clean sheet and notched four goals in a postseason win over Guilford at home.

Ashley Wachter scored all four goals in the victory, with Gracie Gasmann and Sarah Duginske providing one assist each.

The victory advances McHenry to the Class 3A regional championship round, where they will take on Cary-Grove in Cary.

Jacobs 1, Streamwood 0 (OT): At Streamwood, Mia Kraft scored in extra time to lead the Golden Eagles to the Class 3A regional semifinal victory. Lindsey Cepa earned the shutout in net.

Dundee-Crown 2, South Elgin 1: At Elgin, the Chargers held South Elgin in well in check and snagged a victory to keep their season alive.

The win advances D-C to a Class 3A regional final matchup with Hononegah in Rockton on Friday.

Johnsburg 7, North Boone 2: At Johnsburg, the Skyhawks secured a Class 1A sectional preliminary victory over North Boone.

The win advances the Skyhawks to the sectional quarterfinals where they will take on Marian Central on Saturday in Woodstock.

BOYS LACROSSE

Cary-Grove 13, Prairie Ridge 4: At Cary, Colin Desmet had five goals and two assists for the Trojans in the win. Tyler Baumgart added three goals and Nate Jablonski had two goals and three assists.

BASEBALL

Marian Central 12, Pecatonica 2 (5 inn.): At Woodstock, Mason Schwalbach ripped a pair of triples and drive in three runs to lead the Hurricanes past the Indians in their Class 2A regional game.

Peyton Sensabaugh had a double and a single, scored twice, stole two bases and knocked in a run. Frank Lavin threw three innings of no-hit ball for the Hurricanes, striking out three.

Marian faces Rockford Christian at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

WRESTLING

Crystal Lake Central 39, McHenry 33: At McHenry, Grelo Rendon, Brandon Keene, Connor Lezama, Garrett Johnson, Erek MacDonald, Noston Chekennen, Julian Ryguson and Andrew Hudec all notched wins for the Tigers in their close victory.

Jimmy Norris, Nick Bonilla, Lucas Van Diepen, Pedro Jimenez, Ruben Melgarejo and Brody Hallin were winners for McHenry.
