Northwest Herald football roundup: Marian Central’s rally falls short against Providence

Marian Central battled back from a 21-point halftime deficit and came a two-point conversion from forcing overtime against Providence on Friday night.

The Hurricanes missed the two-point conversion with no time remaining and Providence came away with a 35-33 victory in their CCS/ESCC crossover game Friday in New Lenox.

The Celtics, ranked No. 3 in The Associated Press Class 5A poll, took a 28-7 lead in at halftime, but Marian (2-3) came back strong behind quarterback Brendan Hernon, who finished 18 of 39 passing for 297 yards and three touchdowns.

Wide receiver Christian Bentancur had eight receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown. Wide receivers Jack Whalon (three catches, 86 yards) and Colin Piedmonte (three, 46) also had a touchdown catch apiece.
