Name: Caleb Jett
School: McHenry
Sport: Basketball
Why he was selected: Jett, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, had game-highs of eight rebounds and 26 points, including his 1,000th career point, to lead the Warriors past Crystal Lake South in a key Fox Valley Conference game on Jan. 31.
McHenry (21-3) earned a 64-57 overtime win over Burlington Central on Tuesday, with Jett again leading his team with 27 points. With five games remaining, the Warriors are 13-0 in the FVC.
For his performance, Jett was selected as the Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week in an online vote. Huntley wrestler Aubrie Rohrbacher, Crystal Lake Central basketball player Ruby Macke and Jacobs bowler Brett Biondo also were nominated.
Jett answered a few questions from Northwest Herald sports editor Alex Kantecki.
What did it mean to you to reach 1,000 points?
Jett: Scoring my 1,000th point was a milestone that I was hoping I would achieve since my freshman year. It meant a lot to me knowing how proud the young me would be, who thought it was too big of an achievement.
What has been the most memorable moment of the season so far?
Jett: The most memorable part so far is when we went to Wisconsin Dells overnight for a weekend and also played a game. It was a good break from basketball and to have that team bonding experience in the middle of the season.
What professional sports team has the best uniform?
Jett: Philadelphia Eagles, Kelly green jerseys.
Which teammate inspires you?
Jett: The teammate that inspires me the most is Kyle Maness, because he is easily the hardest worker on our team who plays his role well and doesn’t complain about anything. He pushes the guys around him and cares about the team over himself.
What sports moment was so huge that you’ll always remember where you were when it happened?
Jett: I’ll always remember when I witnessed the “double doink” when Cody Parkey missed the game-winning field goal. I was on vacation on a cruise, and I remember hearing the mixture of screams and cheers around the whole ship as it happened.
If you had one last meal to eat, what would be included?
Jett: Medium rare steak and sushi.
What is a sport you are bad at?
Jett: A sport that I love playing that I am trying to get better at but still not very good at is golf.
In baseball, what would be your walk-up music?
Jett: “Praise Jah In the Moonlight” by YG Marley.
What are three of your favorite sports movies?
Jett: "The Blind Side," “Space Jam” with Michael Jordan and “Miracle.”
What is your favorite drill in practice?
Jett: The Michigan State drill, because it’s similar to how we run the floor in games and it’s always competitive.
