Here are five boys swimmers to watch in the Northwest Herald area this season.
Ben Castro, Cary-Grove co-op, jr.
Castro made it to Day 2 of the state meet and took 10th in the 100-yard butterfly to record C-G co-op’s best state finish last season. The Crystal Lake Central junior has been to state in five events (three individual, two relays) throughout his first two high school seasons.
Kacper Cebula, Huntley, sr.
Cebula earned a first-place medal at last season’s FVC Invitational with a victory in the 100 breaststroke. He added a third-place medal in the 200 individual medley and swam the first leg of the Red Raiders’ 400 medley relay winning performance.
Quinn Cynor, Woodstock North co-op, sr.
Cynor holds every Woodstock North co-op individual event record except one and had his best state meet performance last year, taking third in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 backstroke. Cynor won sectional titles in both of those events and earned Most Valuable Swimmer at the FVC Invite. He has four state medals over the past two seasons: third-, fifth-, sixth- and ninth-place finishes.
Ben Rocks, Huntley, so.
Rocks earned a state bid in his first high school season with a 35th-place finish in the 100 free. He helped Huntley come within 22 points of first-place C-G co-op at the conference meet, finishing runner-up in the 100 free and as part of Huntley’s 200 free and 400 free winning relays.
Danial Sanahurskyj, Cary-Grove co-op, so.
Sanahurskyj, who attends Crystal Lake South, had a breakout freshman year and earned FVC Newcomer of the Year honors, placing first in the 200 free and runner-up in the 500 free at the FVC Invite. He swam with Cynor and Cebula on the Kishwaukee YMCA/DeKalb County Swim Team leading up to the high school season.
