Shop With a Cop makes a difference for families at Christmas

Leonardo Bravo, 9, of Carpentersville picks out a game with the help of Carpentersville Police Officer Alberto Villarreal during the Dundee Township Shop with a Cop event at Walmart on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024 in Carpentersville.

Dundee Township’s 21st annual Shop With a Cop event at Walmart in Carpentersville provided underprivileged children the opportunity to have presents, food and warm clothing this Christmas.

Whether due to social, medical or economic needs, 53 families and 155 children were able to participate in the event. Children could shop for presents totaling $150, and if they needed warm clothing they were provided with coats, hats, gloves and scarves, in addition to a gift card to Village Fresh Market in Carpentersville.

Griselda Hernandez, secretary for Shop with a Cop, said the event can make a big difference for families during the holidays.

“We know that it touches them in ways that exceeds our expectations sometimes,” Hernandez said.

Officers from the Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Gilberts, Pingree Grove, Sleepy Hollow, Illinois State Police, and Harper College police departments and civilian volunteers participated in the event.
