A woman was hit in the shoulder and at least one stray bullet pierced a nearby home in Woodstock, shattering a bathroom mirror during a Monday night shooting, police and the neighbor said.
Authorities were investigating the shooting, working with investigators in and around Rockford to determine if it was connected to a reported stolen vehicle and several armed robberies reported in the Rockford region, Woodstock police said in a statement.
The incidents in the Rockford area all occurred within “a short, but plausible, time span” for them to be connected, the department said. Rockford is about 40 miles west of Woodstock.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as of Tuesday afternoon.
“To best ensure that a quality investigation occurs, [Woodstock Police Department] Detectives are taking the time to work methodically and systematically to assemble an ‘airtight’ investigation; we strive to hold those who come to Woodstock and commit such crimes accountable for their actions,” the department said in an update addressed to the community.
Woodstock police responded about 10:30 p.m. Monday to the 1700 block of Yasgur Drive for a report of shots fired, according to a news release.
Police found a woman with a gunshot wound to her shoulder, according to the release. Her condition was not released on Tuesday.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District took her to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital where she was flown via LifeStar to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, district spokesman Alex Vucha said.
Additional officers arrived at the home and checked the area for possible suspects, but did not take anyone into custody, according to the release.
The shooting was under investigation on Tuesday, but preliminary information from witnesses indicated that a physical altercation occurred outside of a residence just before several rounds were fired at the woman and her acquaintance, according to the release.
The suspected shooter or shooters then fled the area in a white sedan, possibly a Cadillac CTS, according to the release.
“At this time, it is still being determined if this was a random, targeted, or isolated incident,” the Woodstock Police Department said in a statement Tuesday morning.
Gustavo Alanis’ home, which backs up to the property where the shooting took place, was struck by a bullet that appeared to have traveled through an upstairs area, shattering a bathroom mirror and damaging the wall next to a shower.
He was at work on a third shift in McHenry when he was alerted by a family member that his home had been hit in a shooting. He left work and found out his mother, who was taking care of his 1-year-old daughter, had been using the sink in the bathroom just moments before the shooting happened.
“My mom finally called and said the guy who lives behind us had his house shot up,” Alanis said. No one was injured in his home.
Police remained in the Sweetwater subdivision where the shooting occurred as of late Tuesday morning, asking residents if they had exterior camera footage of the Monday incident.
