McHenry High School starts new Writers Week tradition

Author Courtney Stevens spoke to McHenry High School students at the Freshman Campus and Upper Campus, and gave an evening presentation at the McHenry Public Library, during the high school’s first Writers Week.

McHenry High School celebrated the inaugural Writers Week celebration from Feb. 7 until Feb. 11, highlighted by its annual Poetry Slam and a visit from author Courtney Stevens.

The author of multiple books, including “Dress Codes for Small Towns”, “Faking Normal” and “The Lies About Truth,” Stevens was invited by a partnership between McHenry High School and the McHenry Public Library, according to a news release. The author encouraged students to dream big and keep writing, while also starting now by publishing short stories based on recent experiences.

Two Poetry Slam events took place simultaneously on Feb. 10 in the gymnasium and auditorium. Mollie Hobson and Charlotte Alexander took first place in the latter and Emma Garrett won the former.
