Congressman Sean Casten tests positive for breakthrough COVID-19 case

Casten represents the southeast portion of McHenry County as part of Illinois District 6

U.S. Rep. Sean Casten, D-Downers Grove, announced Saturday he tested positive for a breakthrough case of COVID-19, according to a statement.

“Having completed both my vaccine and booster shot, I am fortunate to have only mild symptoms,” Casten said in a statement.

Casten, who was elected to office in 2018, represent’s Illinois’ 6th Congressional District, which stretches from Downers Grove and into DuPage County, and includes parts of Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Lake in the Hills, and Cary in McHenry County.

Casten said he is in isolation and will follow recommended health protocols.

“I’m grateful for the miraculous work of our scientists and health care workers – and courage everyone to get vaccinated, boosted, and mask up,” Casten said.

Chicago Democratic Congressmen Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and Bobby Rush both announced at the end of December they also had tested positive for breakthrough COVID-19 cases.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported Friday the statewide positivity rate was at 18.5.%. McHenry County’s positivity rate as of Jan. 4 was at 22.2%.
