Driver killed in Crystal Lake crash identified as Antioch man

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office identified the driver killed in a single-vehicle crash in Crystal Lake Monday morning as a 67-year-old man from Antioch.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as John P. Qualmann, 67, during an autopsy performed Monday, Deputy Coroner Anna Tenuta said Tuesday.

The Antioch man was killed when his 2009 silver Pontiac Vibe, which had been driving south on Route 31, left the roadway for unknown reasons and hit an electrical pole, according to a news release on the incident.

The crash occurred 7:24 a.m. Monday in the 5100 block of South Route 31 in Crystal Lake, near the intersection of Route 31 and Ray Street, Tenuta said. No one else was in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Qualmann was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, according to the release.

The exact cause of his death remains unknown as the coroner’s office awaits the results of the full medical report from his autopsy, Tenuta said.

The crash still is under investigation by the Crystal Lake accident investigations team.
