Police investigating death of man found unresponsive at Island Lake Police Department

No indication of police misconduct, chief says

Officials are investigating the death of a man who suffered apparent self-inflicted injuries at the Island Lake Police Department and later died at a nearby hospital, police said.

The McHenry County Investigation Assistance Team is investigating the death of Rollie Mapa, who died several weeks ago after his arrest in connection with a domestic disturbance, Island Lake Police Chief Dan Palmer said.

Mapa had been in an Island Lake Police Department holding cell for about an hour when he injured himself with an unknown object, Palmer said. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras in the holding area, he said.

First responders at the scene revived Mapa and took him to an area hospital, where he later died, Palmer said. The police chief was unsure of a preliminary cause of death Friday afternoon.

There is no indication of police misconduct, Palmer said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office could not be reached for comment Friday.
