McHenry apartment fire displaces one, results in no injuries

‘Thank goodness, it stayed small,’ battalion chief says

One person was displaced after a fire broke out in a second-floor apartment in the Riverside House Vintage Apartments, a fire official said Wednesday.

The fire was contained to the apartment it originated in, with some smoke damage throughout the second floor of the three-story building on 3308 W. Elm St., McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood said.

There were no injuries, he said.

When fire personnel arrived at the building, the apartment was empty, Harwood said. The only occupant of the apartment had already safely exited the building. Several others in the building evacuated themselves as well for about an hour.

The damage is estimated at around $10,000, Harwood said.

The apartment is uninhabitable, and Red Cross will assist the person who lives there, he said

“Thank goodness, it stayed small,” Harwood said. “Since we were actually dispatched there for a fire alarm, it just goes to prove again how fire alarm systems actually do really, truly alert us to fires sooner than anybody calling in on 911.”
