A barn north of Marengo caught fire Saturday afternoon and sustained heavy damage, as one Marengo Fire Protection District firefighter was sent to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation while responding to the incident.
It was the second structure fire incident Marengo firefighters handled Saturday, after they battled a house fire early in the day where a man was found dead.
Firefighters were called to the barn fire about 3:30 p.m. in the 22000 block of Kishwaukee Valley Road, Marengo Battalion Chief Mark Pankow said.
No animals were harmed by the incident. He said he thinks the barn will be considered a total loss.
The firefighter, who was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation at the barn fire, is expected to make a full recovery, Pankow said.
Other area fire departments sent crews to the barn fire to assist in the response, he said.
The cause of the barn fire is still being investigated.
