McHenry County Animal Control reopens its adoption center by appointment only

Adoption center is rolling out ‘Luck of the Draw’ special where potential adopters can pay as little as $40

The McHenry County Animal Control reopened its adoption center by appointment only and is marking the occasion by holding a cat adoption event where the adoption fee is determined at random.

Potential adopters can draw a ticket that will determine the adoption fee they will pay to bring home a cat from the adoption center, according to a news release. Fees drawn will be $40, $60 or $80.

“Our ‘Luck of the Draw’ adoption special will run until all cats available under this promotion find their forever families,” McHenry County Animal Control Manager Maryellen Howell said. “We are excited to be reopening our adoption center and are thrilled about connecting potential pet owners with a cat that fits into their family.”

Adoption fees for kittens six months and under typically are $100 and fees for kittens and cats older than six months run $80, according to McHenry County Animal Control’s website.

Fees for dogs will remain the same at $150.00 for puppies 6 months and younger and $125.00 for those older, according to the website.

Cat adoption fees cover surgical sterilization, a microchip, one-year registration, flea and tick control treatment, and age-appropriate vaccinations, including rabies, deworming, and FeLV/FIV testing.

To set up an adoption appointment, an adoption application, available at https://bit.ly/MCACadopt, must first be submitted and approved. Animal Control will then contact potential adopters to set up an appointment.

Adoptable animals can be viewed at McHenry County Animal Control’s Facebook page in the Adoptable Pets album or on petharbor.com. To view MCDH adoptable cats by visiting petharbor.com, search by entering Crystal Lake as the city name and select “Adopt a Pet.” More cats are expected to become available under this promotion.

There is no set end date for the promotion, a county spokeswoman said. The promotion will run until all the cats available under it find homes.

The McHenry County Animal Control adoption center is located at 100 N. Virginia St. in Crystal Lake. For more information about the event, go to https://bit.ly/MCAChome or call (815) 459-6222.
