One woman is dead and another was taken to the hospital after a crash in McHenry on Saturday morning.

At 10:24 a.m., a black GMC Acadia was traveling north in the 4300 block of Route 31, and a white Acura TLX was traveling south, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Aimee Knop said in an email.

For “unknown reasons,” the GMC crossed into the southbound lane of traffic and struck the Acura head-on, Knop said.

The driver of the Acura died, and the driver of the GMC was flown to Condell from Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with serious injuries, according to a news release.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said the the person killed was a 56-year-old Elmhurst woman. The driver of the GMC who suffered serious injuries is a 30-year-old Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, woman.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Route 31 between Pioneer and Barnard Mill roads was closed for about four hours as police investigated the scene of the incident.

A news release and additional information will be forthcoming, Knop said.
