The harsh winter season can wreak havoc on a home’s plumbing system. Here are three of the most common winter plumbing problems, along with steps you can take to protect your home:
- Frozen pipes. Sudden temperature drops, inadequate insulation, or low thermostat settings can cause water inside the pipes to freeze and expand, potentially leading to cracks. Take steps during the warmer months to ward off the headache of frozen pipes, such as wrapping exposed pipes with insulation to help maintain a warmer temperature, sealing up any cracks or gaps around your home’s foundation to prevent cold air from coming in, and disconnecting garden hoses from outdoor faucets and turning off their water supply. Additionally, a slow but steady trickle of water from an interior faucet on an outside wall can help prevent freezing, especially on cold nights.
- Burst pipes. Frozen pipes can lead to the more severe issue of burst pipes. This can be extensive and costly. To prevent burst pipes, follow the same steps to prevent frozen pipes. If a pipe does burst, quickly find and shut off the main water supply valve to prevent further damage and open the faucet closest to the burst pipe to relieve pressure. Then contact Duane Blanton Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Cooling; they’ll send an expert plumber to assess the damage and make necessary repairs.
- Water heater issues. During the winter months, water heaters have to work harder to provide an adequate supply of hot water. This can result in lukewarm water and sediment buildup in the tank, reducing efficiency and lifespan. To prevent these issues, schedule an annual inspection with Duane Blanton Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Cooling.
