The body of Carter McGowan was found about 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 4300 block of North Route 2 – midway between Oregon and Byron – by an individual searching for fossils along the river, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

Sarah Safranek, 37, the mother of Nathaniel Burton, is accused of killing him in the family’s Oregon home in February 2021. The judge's ruling will allow some statements made by the 7-year-old prior to his death to be entered into evidence.
