It may be cold outside, but that doesn’t mean outdoor activity is out of the question. Quite the contrary as the St. Charles Park District looks to embrace the season with its January Jamboree on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Dubbed a wintertime celebration, the all-ages event will feature a number of family-friendly offerings at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center.
Among the activities will be the opportunity to take a guided hike with one of the center’s experts. During the low-impact outing, families are encouraged to seek out wildlife such as overwintering birds. Guides will also share how to look for telltale signs of animal life as hikers traverse the prairie, forest and wetlands near the center.
Families can also have fun with snow painting. Children are encouraged to express their creativity using the snowy ground—or a white tarp in the event no snow is present—as their canvas.
“We will have spray bottles filled with all different colors and kids will be able to “tie-dye” the snow,” said Emily Shanahan, nature programs supervisor at the center
A cozy fire pit will provide the perfect spot for families to take a break, and all are welcome to make s’mores and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while enjoying the fire’s glow. Popcorn will also be available during the event.
Inside the center, families can take part in turtle races, standing along the sidelines to cheer Hickory Knolls’ resident box turtle on to victory.
“Turtle races are a fan favorite here at the discovery center,” Shanahan added.
A critter meet and greet will feature additional animals, including a variety of snakes and turtles.
Participants will also have the chance to spend some time with companions usually spotted during the warmer weather. Ollie, June and Stanley, who represent park district pools, Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Swanson Pool, will be on hand. These fun-loving mascots will offer chances to win free passes to the St. Charles Park District facilities.
Time slots for the event are 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and noon. The event is $10 per person. Those 1 years old and younger will be admitted at no cost. Advance registration is required.
