DIXON — The St. Mary’s Middle School Mathletes team competed in the statewide competition held in Skokie on March 5.
The team qualified by winning the local Mathcounts competition hosted by the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and Sauk Valley Community College.
St. Mary’s qualifying team was Ryan Welty, Gage Helfrich, George Jungerman and Danny Welty as a substitute for Sam Smith.
During the local chapter competition, St. Mary’s School was first, Rochelle Middle was second and St. Anne of Dixon was third.
During the individual competitors Helfrich took second, Ryan Welty third, Danny Welty fourth and Jungerman was fifth.
Mathcounts provides an extra incentive and atmosphere for students to push themselves to achieve more in mathematics. There are oral and written rounds.
The national championship includes 224 students from 56 states and territories and will be held in May.
