Rock Falls man charged in felony eluding cases will remain jailed in Whiteside County

Jordan L. Kaye

MORRISON – A Rock Falls man accused of outrunning police twice will remain detained in the Whiteside County Jail after a judge ruled he poses too much of a risk to be released.

Jordan L. Kaye, 24, made a court appearance Monday, five days after he was taken into custody Dec. 25 in the 1300 block of West Third Street in Sterling on outstanding warrants that include one from Whiteside County charging him in a Sept. 7 drug and weapons case and the other a Rock Island County warrant charging him with possessing a stolen vehicle, meth and a firearm as a felon.

A detention order signed Monday states that Kaye must remain in jail because of his “continued violations of the law in escalating fashion, failing to appear in court, failure to comply with orders of the court, aggravated fleeing from law enforcement at dangerously high rates of speed and multiple continued offenses.”

His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing set for 1 p.m. Jan. 13.

In the days since Kaye was taken into custody Dec. 25, several other charges have been filed against him.

On Thursday, Dec. 26, he was formally charged in Whiteside County in connection with a Sept. 5 police chase. Court documents filed in that case indicate a police officer tried to make a traffic stop on Kaye’s vehicle when Kaye, who police said was driving on a revoked license, fled in his car at speeds of at least 35 mph above the speed limit and drove through two stops signs, one at Emerson and Galt roads and the other at Emerson Road and West Fourth Street in Sterling.

The Sept. 5 charges include two counts of felony aggravated fleeing or eluding a police officer, one count each of driving on a revoked license and speeding, and two counts of disobeying a traffic control device, according to a criminal complaint.

In addition, he was charged Friday, Dec. 27, with possessing a stolen 2012 Volkswagen Passat on Dec. 25, according to court records.

He also was formally charged Dec. 27 in an unrelated case in which he is accused of possessing a stolen 2009 Chevy Silverado and leading police on a chase Dec. 24. Charges include two counts of felony aggravated fleeing or eluding a police officer, one count each of driving on a revoked license and speeding, and two counts of failing to stop at an intersection, namely at Avenue D and Fifth Street and Avenue D and Dixon Avenue, both in Rock Falls.

The Sept. 7 weapons and drug case, for which he was formally charged Oct. 9 and the warrant was issued, accuses him of two counts of possessing firearm ammunition as a felon, and one count each of possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin and driving on a revoked license, according to court documents.

According to court documents in that case, the first count alleges that Kaye possessed one round of .380-caliber ammunition, which he was not allowed to possess because he had been convicted in Whiteside County in June 2020 of possessing a firearm as a felon. The second count accuses him of illegally possessing the ammunition as a felon because he was convicted of a forcible felony in 2020. Court documents indicate that the conviction was for one count of aggravated battery/great bodily harm.

The third count accuses him of unlawful possession of less than 5 grams of meth. The remaining two charges allege that he possessed less than 15 grams of a substance containing heroin and that he was driving while his license was revoked. He was wanted for failing to appear for an Oct. 28 court date in that case.
