Man found dead in Sterling apartment

STERLING – Sterling police are investigating the death of a man found Wednesday morning in a Sterling apartment.

According to a news release from the Sterling Police Department, police were dispatched about 9 a.m. to a multi-unit apartment complex at 2100 Freeport Road, Sterling, for a report of a gunshot victim.

Officers were directed to an apartment in which a man was found with a gunshot wound, according to the release. Officers and CGH paramedics tried to render aid to the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Sterling Police Department Detective Unit initiated an investigation, and all evidence shows that this was an isolated incident in which the man died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the release.

No other people were found injured or present inside the apartment, and no property was damaged, police said.

The name of the man has not yet been released because his family is being notified.

The Sterling Police Department was assisted by the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, the Whiteside County Coroner’s Office, CGH Medical Center EMS and the Sterling Fire Department.
