Sterling’s Zyan Westbrook wins WB6 title at 132: Friday’s Sauk Valley roundup

Sterling’s Zyan Westbrook controls Geneseo’s Kie Smith in a 132 pound match Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, during the Western Big 6 conference wrestling tournament held at Sterling High School. Westbrook went on to win the 132-pound title.

Boys wrestling

Sterling 5th at Big 6 meet: Geneseo won the Western Big 6 Conference meet with 240 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Quincy (190) and Moline (108.5). Rock Island (106.5) took fourth, followed by Sterling (100.5), Galesburg (83.5), United Township (59) and Alleman (15.5).

Zyan Westbrook was the 132-pound champion after pinning Moline’s Housseyn Ndiaye in three minutes, six seconds. He won his first match via 12-0 major decision before two pins.

Cael Lyons was runner-up at 126 for Sterling after falling to Geneseo’s Tim Sebastian by fall in the final. Charlie Reyes also took second at 215 after falling by pin to Geneseo’s Colten Mooney. Gage Tate finished in third at 175 for Sterling after winning his final two matches by pin.

Boys basketball

Quincy 84, Sterling 45: The Golden Warriors fell on the road to the Associated Press Class 4A No. 2 Blue Devils in Western Big 6 Conference action. Keshaun Thomas led Quincy (21-2, 10-0) with 21 points as Sterling fell to 11-13 and 3-7 in the Big 6.

Mendota 57, Newman 55: Trailing 42-40 heading into the fourth quarter, the Comets fell short at home. Newman led 16-11 after the first quarter and the game was tied at 27 at halftime. Garrett Matznick (13 points) and John Rowzee (17) were the only Comets to reach double figure scoring.

Fulton 50, Milledgeville 40: The Steamers improved to 13-12 after Owen VanZuiden scored a team-high 14 points off the bench in the road win. Jacob Voss also scored 11 points for Fulton. Micah Toms-Smith scored a game-high 15 points for the Missiles.

Forreston 67, Orangeville 34: Forreston rolled to a road win as Kendall Erdmann scored 20 points and Brendan Greenfield added 16. Greenfield also had 11 rebounds and five assists in the win.

Girls basketball

Genoa-Kingston 49, Oregon 41: Ella Dannhorn led the Hawks with 14 points in the road setback. Aniyah Sarver added eight points for Oregon.
