Alex Dusing, 18, of Polo, is the Polo Community High School April Student of the Month. Her parents are Jennifer and Chris Dusing, and her sibling is McKenzie Dusing.
Favorite class: Family and consumer sciences, because it was fun getting to cook and eat.
Least-favorite class: Physical education, because I have had three knee injuries.
Favorite teacher: I don’t have just one favorite, because all my teachers are always willing to help.
School activities in which you participate: Golf, basketball, volleyball, track, Family Club, Career Club, Community Leaders of America, Spanish Club, and Varsity Club.
Civic, church, or other volunteer activities in which you participate: I volunteer for 4U Charities, which is fundraising for the school district, and I also volunteered for Special Olympics.
What will you do after high school? I will attend Maryville University in St. Louis to study in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

What is something you learned in high school that you think you’ll never use? Coding on a computer, because I am going into a field that doesn’t require coding.
If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? Better lunches, because I wouldn’t have to leave every day.
If you could create any new class at your school, what would it be? Introduction to health care profession, because it is a growing field.
What does it take to be a successful high school student? Time management and being respectful.
Do you have a job? I work at the Polo Pool as a lifeguard. I enjoy it because I get to work with my classmates and it is a fun work environment.
How would you describe your group of friends? I have a small, outgoing group of friends.
What do you do in your free time? I like to golf, snowmobile and hang out with my family.
What kind of music are you listening to? Country.
What is one thing you can’t live without? My phone, because I have everything on it.
What scares you the most? Snakes.
If you could have any job, what would it be? An astronaut, because only a few get to do that.
If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? Bora Bora, because it is gorgeous.
What is your favorite childhood memory? Being able to go to my grandparents’ cabin in the Michigan Upper Peninsula.
What is the best way to cheer you up? Going to get ice cream with friends.
What is your life’s philosophy? Nothing is given and everything must be earned.
