Frederick Douglass re-enactment will commemorate Black History Month

Steven A. Cole, a living history presenter, will portray Frederick Douglass as part of a Black History Month commemoration Feb. 20 at The Worship Center in Dixon.

DIXON – Steven A. Cole, a living history presenter, will portray Frederick Douglass as part of a Black History Month commemoration at 11 a.m. Feb. 20 at The Worship Center, 403 N. Ottawa.

Cole, who is also an historian, has often depicted Douglass, a figure of the 19th century abolitionist movement in the United States. He has provided his one-man portrayal in Baltimore, where Douglass escaped slavery, at the Gettysburg National Battlefield, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and at locations in Illinois where Lincoln-Douglas senatorial debates were re-enacted.

Cole is originally from Freeport and was inspired to learn more about Douglass after learning he gave two speeches in the town.
