Prep roundup: Amboy Clippers in complete control against rival AFC Raiders

Eastland Cougars, Polo Marcos also grab wins in girls basketball; Sterling boys swim past Galesburg

The Amboy girls basketball team rolled past rival AFC on Tuesday night, winning 69-31 in the NUIC opener for both teams in Amboy.

The Clippers (2-0) led 23-5 after the first quarter, then stretched it to 43-9 by halftime.

Mallory Powers led all scorers with 19 points, Gabby Jones scored 16, and Abi Payne added 13; all three sat out the fourth quarter. Olivia Dinges chipped in eight points, as eight different players scored for Amboy.

Brittney Mundell led the Raiders with nine points.

Polo 49, Forreston 36: The Marcos rallied from a 21-14 halftime deficit with a 24-4 edge in the third quarter en route to an NUIC win on the road.

Abby Gorzny led a balanced Polo effort with 11 points, and Becca Wagner and Alex Dusing scored 10 each.

Eastland 76, Milledgeville 18: The Cougars scored at least 20 points in each of the first three quarters in an NUIC win.

The Missiles served as the home team, but the game was moved to the bigger gym in Lanark to allow fans to attend.

Eastland (3-0) led 26-5 after one quarter, 46-10 at halftime, and 68-14 after three periods.

Talena Rogers had 15 points, five rebounds and four steals for Eastland (3-0). while Chloe Sweitzer finished with 14 points and three steals. Chloe Waller added 12 points and four steals, and Karlie Krogman chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Adriana Miller scored 12 points for Milledgeville.

Lena-Winslow 43, Oregon 25: The Hawks trailed 15-2 after one quarter and couldn’t catch up in a nonconference loss in Lena.

Hadley Lutz’s eight points paced Oregon, and Ashlyn Kitzmiller scored five.

Scales Mound-River Ridge 52, West Carroll 48: The Thunder fell behind 12-8 after one quarter, then rallied in the second and third to force a 40-40 tie going into the final period, but came up short in an NUIC game on the road.

Madison Haynes finished with 19 points, four rebounds, four blocks and three steals for West Carroll, and Tori Moshure had 13 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

Boys basketball

Princeton 74, Bureau Valley 43: The Storm trailed by 19 at halftime, and after a brief rally to open the third quarter, they failed to keep up with the Tigers in a Three Rivers loss at the Storm Cellar.

Carter Salisbury scored a game-high 20 points to lead BV.

Boys bowling

Sterling 3,111, Rock Island 2,877: Carter Schlegel’s 636 series led the Golden Warriors, as they won all three games in a Western Big 6 dual in Milan.

Schlegel rolled games of 215, 215 and 206. Andrew Doughty added a 587 series that included games of 212 and 202, and Jordan Glazier added a 562 series and a 224 high game.

Oregon 3,249, Dakota 2,284: Isaac Kaltenbrun’s 632 series and Jacob Smith’s 624 series led the Hawks to victory on the road.

Smith had Oregon’s high game with a 259, while Kaltenbrun opened with a 226 and closed with a 245. Kyle Strite added a 579 series for the Hawks.

Girls bowling

United Township 2,890, Sterling 2,843: The Golden Warriors led by 29 pins after the first game and by 17 after two, but UT rallied to win the match behind a 1,006-942 edge in the final game.

Olivia Zinanni rolled a 648 series for Sterling, with a 247 second game and 212 third game. Kylie Bresley opened her 553 series with a 215 first game.

Oregon 3,239, Dakota 1,984: The Hawks won all three games by at least 370 pins in a dual victory on the road.

Rebbeca Meyers closed her 614 series with a 218 game, and Sammantha Meyers’ 612 series included a 228 second game. Alysa Conley added a 567 series, and Ava Wight chipped in a 537 for Oregon.

Boys swimming

Sterling 116, Galesburg 66: The Water Warriors rolled to a Western Big 6 road victory, winning 10 of the 12 events led by a trio of four-event champs.

Calvin Sandefer won the 200 freestyle (1:50.90) and 100 free (50.01 seconds), Reiley Austin won the 50 free (22.57) and 100 backstroke (55.53), and Michael Garland won the 100 butterfly (56.66) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.23) for Sterling. Those three then teamed up with Mason Adams to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.28) and the 400 free relay (3:33.40).

Adams also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:50.79), joined by Braeden Ruiz, Connor Pham and Peter Garland. Ruiz added a victory in the 200 IM (2:18.89).
