Looking for something to do in the Sauk Valley? Here is our list of five upcoming activities to consider.
1. “A Christmas Carol:” The Mosaic Theatre Troupe will present “A Christmas Carol” from Dec. 19 to 22 at the Northwest Territory Historic Theatre, 205 W. Fifth St., Dixon. Performance times are at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 21 and 2 p.m. Dec. 22. The Mosaic Theatre Troupe’s mission is to make an impact on the community through the performing arts. For this show, the troupe is partnering with Dixon PADS and requesting audience members to bring one or more of the following material donations to the show: twin sheets (fitted and flat); twin blankets; standard size pillows and pillowcases; laundry detergent (unscented); personal hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, bars of soap, shampoo, etc.); and paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, etc.). 2. Emmanuel Church of Morrison’s “Voices of Praise” cantata: EVOP will present its 17th annual Christmas cantata, “Agnus Dei - The Music of Michael W. Smith,” with three performances throughout the weekend. This year’s cantata boasts a choir of 90 voices, the largest in the group’s 17-year history. Singers from more than 20 local churches will join Emmanuel’s Sanctuary Choir for a night of Christmas music. No tickets are needed for this free, hourlong event. A free-will offering will be collected, and all ages are welcome. Showtimes are at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22. A fellowship hour will follow each performance. A free shuttle service will be available an hour before and after each performance. The shuttle will pick up at Ebenezer Reformed Church, 309 E. Park St., in Morrison and deliver guests to Emmanuel Church at 202 E. Morris St. Call the Emmanuel Church office for more information at 815-772-3890.
3. Dinner at the American Legion: Dixon American Legion Post 12 will be serving grilled ribeye steaks, a baked potato or French fries, roll, vegetable, salad and dessert from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The cost is $25. Call 815-284-2003 to reserve a meal, available for dine-in at the Post, 1120 W. First St., or for carryout.
4. Chili luncheon: Lee Center UCC Church and the Amboy Lions Club are hosting their annual chili luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Amboy Community Building, 280 W. Wasson Road, Amboy. The menu includes chili with all the fixings. Jell-O, cake and drinks will be served to round out the meal. Carryout meals are available. This event also holds a basket raffle. Tickets are six for $5 or $1 each. Baskets are donated to the raffle and always have a variety of items in them. There is no cost for the luncheon, but donations will gladly be accepted at the door.
5: Flock to the Rock: The fifth annual Flock to the Rock will be Feb. 8 in Rock Falls. Head down to the Lower Dam, 300 W. First St., Rock Falls, any time before 10 a.m. to view the eagles soaring around the Rock River, and don’t forget your cameras and binoculars! Then, go over to Rock Falls American Legion Post 902, 712 Fourth Ave., (note the location change from previous years) at 10 a.m., when there will be two educational speakers. The first, from the Northern Illinois Raptor Rehab & Education, will give an hourlong presentation about birds of prey and will bring birds such as owls, hawks and more. The second speaker will present a 45-minute program about Native American storytelling. Robert Storm, an ice carver, will entertain with his skills of live ice sculpting outside the American Legion. This event is free and welcomes all ages.
