Sheriff identifies Dixon teens killed in collision Saturday

AMBOY – The two 14-year-olds who died in a one-vehicle crash Saturday when the vehicle they were in struck a tree west of Amboy were Brecken Kooy and Cayley Krug, both of Dixon, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release this morning.

Passenger Madison Rockwood, 14, of Amboy, is in fair condition at Peoria Children’s Hospital, and driver Draven Webb, 19, of Dixon, was in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford on Monday, also in fair condition, the release said.

The collision occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Robbins Road south of Amboy Road. The crash is under investigation, and no further details were released.

The release did not say if weather was a factor, but it was raining at the time, and had been raining most of the day, the National Weather Service said.

Cayley, daughter of Chris and Cathleen Krug, was a freshman at Dixon High School and a past member of Key Club and youth softball.

In addition to her parents, she also is survived by her siblings Dustin, Colton, Austin and Christopher Krug; her paternal grandmother, Vicki Brantner of Dixon; her maternal grandparents, Larry and Bertha Newton of Chadwick; and aunts Cindy Newton of Polo, Cherie Newton of Erie, and Chris Aude of Chadwick.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. Her funeral Saturday will be private. A memorial has been established to the Dixon High School Athletics Department. Go to www.thejonesfh.com to send condolences.

Brecken was an eighth-grader at Reagan Middle School; his funeral arrangements are not yet completed.

The Dixon School District has counselors and social workers in all of its buildings, and they are being made available to all students and staff, including those who are attending school remotely, for the foreseeable future, Superintendent Margo Empen said.

Those who are learning remotely and feel the need are encouraged to call their schools and talk to a counselor over the phone, or in-person or arrangements can be made, Empen said.
