DIXON – The Dixon Historic Theatre is asking for the city’s help to expand on the momentum from its first season after revitalizing the century-old building and streamlining operations.

Theater Executive Director Tim Boles recently presented to the Dixon City Council on how the first season turned out, plans for the future and a request for $100,000 from the city to go toward events.

A year ago, the city gave the theater $200,000 for booking high-caliber acts. The goal was to have at least 20 events during the first season, and they hosted 36. The latest performances included illusionist Reza: Edge of Illusion, Dinosaur World Live, Led Zeppelin tribute band Get the Led Out as well as tribute bands for Michael Jackson and Van Halen.

Boles said they were off to a “really robust start” with the lineup of performances during the season, and they’re pleased with hosting a children’s theater and community theater.

The theater generated $180,000 in ticket sales, and Boles said they were expecting closer to $270,000, but they’re still in good shape.

“Things are going very well, and we’re going in the right direction,” Boles said.

March 15 marks the historic theater’s 100th anniversary, and the roaring 20s celebration will include renown Grammy- nominated jazz musician Judy Carmichael and her jazz quintet, as well as a costume contest and other activities at 114 S. Galena Ave.

The theater will also be rolling out a campaign with the goal of raising $60,000 in sponsorships.

“The lights are on, things are happening, and we’re moving toward that goal where we have something every single week,” he said.

The century-old theater had a grand reopening in September, following years of efforts to streamline and improve operations as a community icon and tourism magnet.

Repairs and renovations include replacing the fly system that controls the stage rigging, installing new curtains, removing and bringing the fire escape up to code, giving the facility a deep cleaning, making major repairs to the boiler and air conditioning, installing smart lighting, and providing upgrades to the sound system.

Councilman Dennis Considine said the new lighting looks great, and Councilman Chris Bishop said the theater should do more family shows because Dinosaur World Live was packed.

The council will decide on budgeting donations for community organizations including the theater later this month.
