CHICAGO – A Rockford attorney who represented the family of a woman killed in a boating crash near Oregon in 2016 has been suspended for, among other things harassing other attorneys by “using vulgar, profane abusive … [and] anti-Semitic remarks,” the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission said.
Cynthia Jean Koroll is representing Robin and David Swaziek of Loves Park, the parents of Megan Wells. Wells was killed June 24, 2016, when a johnboat operated by Marc Mongan of Oregon struck her as it went over back of the pontoon boat in which she was riding.
The Illinois Supreme Court ruled Koroll to be suspended for six months, starting Oct. 14, and after 60 days that suspension will be stayed while she is on conditional probation for a year. Over a roughly 3-week period in 2015, Koroll sent dozens of emails, texts and other communications to attorneys in Florida with whom she was engaged in a dispute, ARDC said in its quarterly disciplinary report.
“Many of those messages were vulgar, profane abusive, included anti-Semitic remarks, and served no purpose other than to harass or burden their recipients,” according to the report.
Koroll previously had been disqualified in 2013 from representing a patron in a post-decree domestic relations case because her former law partner had been representing the man’s spouse while they were members of the same firm, according to the report. Koroll must comply with any psychiatric or other treatment programs, complete a professionalism seminar and reimburse the commission for court costs, or else her probation will be revoked, the court said in its order filed Sept. 23.
