Caring for Solar Panels During Winter

There are many misconceptions out there about solar energy in general, and some of them might be about solar in the winter. Solar panels do, in fact, still work in the winter time. As long as the sun is still shining, solar panels are hard at work, supplying renewable energy to homes, farms, and businesses.

During the winter months when the days are shorter and the sun is lower in the sky, your solar panels’ production may experience a decrease. While snow typically slides off the solar panels on its own, if heavy snow remains on ground-mounted solar panels for a long period of time, you may want to clear the snow off of your panels. This can be done by pushing snow or ice off with a soft-bristled broom. Avoid climbing on your roof to reach the solar panels that are only accessible with a ladder. Most of the time, snow or ice will come off your solar panels on its own.
