At FMC Natatorium in Westmont on Friday, Dundee-Crown co-op’s Maggie Nowak and Crystal Lake South co-op’s Bella Fontana earned spots in Saturday’s state finals. Both will swim in consolation heats.

Longtime friends and competitors in the pool, Prairie Ridge senior Abby Uhl and Crystal Lake South junior Bella Fontana will compete in their final high school races together at this weekend's IHSA Girls Swimming and Diving State Meet.

Prairie Ridge alumna Val Tarazi made her Olympic debut Friday when she took part in the 200-meter individual medley in Paris.

Prairie Ridge graduate Valerie Tarazi is not done with competitive swimming, although her eligibility at Auburn is exhausted. She trained with her college team and will swim for Palestine in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. "It’s been my dream my whole life."

Cary-Grove's fourth Class 6A football state championship takes the top spot among local sports stories for 2023. Local pitchers Bobby Miller and Quinn Priester making it to the major leagues is No. 2.

La Salle-Peru co-op freshman Sam Nauman, who attends Henry-Senachwine, is the 2023 NewsTribune Girls Swimmer of the Year after setting records and qualifying for state.

Allison was the lone state qualifier for DeKalb-Sycamore, hitting the qualifying mark in both the 100 free (52.89) and 200 free (1:54.61). Both were personal bests. She is the Daily Chronicle girls swimmer of the year.

Crystal Lake South co-op's Abby Uhl beat her own expectations by placing in all four of her events at state this fall. For her accomplishments, Uhl was named the Northwest Herald's Girls Swimmer of the Year.

Lincoln-Way East senior swimmer Ellie Egan was voted the Herald-News Athlete of the Week after finishing 10th at the state meet in the 100-yard butterfly and 12th in the 200 individual medley. She also helped the Griffins' 400 freestyle relay team place 16th.

Cary-Grove's Maggie Bendell took second place in diving at the IHSA Girls Swimming and Diving State Meet on Saturday. Crystal Lake South co-op brought home four medals.

The 2023 IHSA Girls Swimming & Diving State Meet will be held Friday and Saturday at FMC Natatorium in Westmont. This year, the Sauk Valley area will be represented by Sterling junior Madison Austin and a quintet from the Byron co-op.

Byron girls swimming won the 12-team field Saturday at the Rockford Jefferson Sectional with a 229 score, Hononegah took second with 199 and Sterling finished third with 181.

West Chicago, which co-ops with Batavia and Geneva, scored 275 points to win Saturday’s St. Charles North Sectional. The host North Stars were second with 256 points. It was the first sectional championship for West Chicago since 1992.
