Will County sheriff deputy died suddenly while on duty

Joliet — A sheriff’s deputy who was on duty at the Will County jail died suddenly on Wednesday after he was suffering from back pain.

Mike Olino, 47, was taken to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet after he experienced back pain and then displayed worsening symptoms, according to a Will County Sheriff’s Office news release. Olino was pronounced deceased shortly after he arrived the hospital.

The news of Olino’s death “has shaken the entire Will County Sheriff’s Office staff,” sheriff officials said. The sheriff’s office extended their deepest sorrow to Olino’s wife, two children, his family and friends.

“Deputy correctional officer Mike Olino will be remembered by his co-workers, not only as a great guy and friend, but also as being a true family man,” officials said. “Not a day would go by without him speaking about his loving wife, his daughter, his son or his extended family. He lived his life for them.”

Olino began his career at the jail on Dec. 29, 2003, three years after he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he received many awards, officials said.

Olino became “very knowledgeable about the day-to-day operations of the facility,” officials said.

“He was a senior officer on day shift and was always willing to help his co-workers. He was highly respected and had a gift of making those around him find humor to get through tough days,” officials said.

Olino was also a proud member of the Emergency Response Team and his commitment to the jail and his peers “was evident to all that knew him,” officials said.
