Joliet warns residents of water scam

Joliet officials on Monday warned residents to be watchful of imposters trying to get into their houses posing as city workers.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman said scammers tried to get into an elderly woman’s house recently while claiming to be city workers checking residents’ water systems.

“They said, ‘This is official. We need to check your water,’” Quillman said. “I just want people to know this is a scam.”

Council at Large Jan Hallums Quillman sits in on a hearing on the validity of nominating petitions of two City Council candidates at the Joliet City Electoral Board meeting on January 4th.

The men had cards but no city identification, Quillman said. They claimed to be working on a “water update.”

Quillman’s comments were made at a City Council workshop meeting on Monday.

City manager Beth Beatty said a warning about the scam would be posted on a city Facebook page this week.

The city is in the midst of a massive water project, replacing miles of water mains as it prepares to switch to Lake Michigan water by 2030.
