The village of Plainfield celebrated the opening of the new 143rd Street West Roadway Extension Dec. 18 with a ribbon-cutting.
The construction consisted of a new, mile-long road between Ridge and Steiner roads to redirect traffic – especially commercial vehicles – away from Plainfield’s downtown corridor as well as to improve travel times to the western portion of Plainfield.
The 143rd Street West Roadway Extension includes “intersection improvements and a new traffic signal at Ridge Road, stormwater improvements and the extension of water main along 143rd Street and north along Ridge Road to the Grande Park subdivision,” according to a news release from the village of Plainfield.
The total project cost $12 million and encompassed “5,850 feet of roadway, 8,123 feet of water main and 4,600 feet of sanitary sewer,” according to the release.
The village of Plainfield received more than $10 million in funding, according to the release.
Kendall County provided $1 million toward the cost of the 143rd Street/Ridge Road traffic signal, according to the release.
State Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel assisted the village of Plainfield with obtaining a $980,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, according to the release.
Will County awarded $500,000 to the village of Plainfield through the American Rescue Plan Act, according to the release.
Funding for the new 143rd Street West Roadway Extension also came from the following intergovernmental agreements: Community College District 525, Plainfield School District 202, the Plainfield Fire Protection District, the Plainfield Public Library District, Plainfield Township, the Plainfield Park District, the Plainfield Township Road District, Will County and the Will County Forest Preserve District.
Baxter & Woodman Consulting Engineers designed the project, which was built by Austin Tyler Construction, according to the release.
Development is already underway along the new 143rd Street West Roadway Extension, according to the release.
The industrial businesses lBP Chill and Trammel Crow-Stewart Farm are currently under construction, mass grading for the DHL facility is underway, and DSV is expected to begin construction soon, according to the release.
When the road is transferred to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the 143rd Street West Roadway Extension – combined with other corridor projects – will become part of the future Route 126, according to the release.
