Joliet woman killed in crash

A 55-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle in Joliet on Tuesday.

Officers responded to the crash about 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Larkin Avenue and Vernon Street, Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English said.

Officers learned that a 25-year-old male driver of a Nissan Sentra was traveling north on Larkin Avenue and approaching Vernon Street in the inside lane when he struck a pedestrian, English said.

Joy Gaines, 55, of Joliet, was identified as the pedestrian by the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The woman was taken to Ascension Saint Joseph – Joliet hospital, where she was declared dead, English said.

The driver of the Nissan Sentra remained at the scene and was not injured.
