Joliet Public Library can be place of calm and coziness in winter cold

Ah, January. One of the most frigid months of our Midwestern winters. The air is crisp, dry and biting. Roadsides are lined with garbage bags stuffed with empty toy boxes and once-loved, now discarded Christmas trees. Neighbors take down the twinkling lights and get back to the routine left behind for the holidays. Oh, and let’s not forget – your nostrils freeze.

One thing that gets me through the winters in Joliet is the Danish concept of comfort, coziness and the simple things in life, referred to as hygge. I view hygge as a way to embrace the peace and calm that comes with January, which is what makes libraries the epitome of the word.

A place to disconnect

At the Joliet Public Library, I often talk about what makes us a bustling hub in the community. Our digital media studio with its technology and 3D printing, our children’s programs that fill up the Black Road Branch with giggles, the conversation, the noise.

But there are also spaces that feature the more traditional way of library life, the timelessness of quiet spaces. A place to unplug and disconnect from whatever modern technology is creating a buzz in your head. Browse the stacks of books without distraction. Pick up an old favorite or something new. Settle into one of the nooks at either location and get reading. Get lost in fiction or find a new subject to explore. Unwind and enjoy.

Finding comfort in community

No matter where you go inside our buildings, you will find people of all ages and backgrounds, each bringing different perspectives, knowledge and experiences. Our staff is there to provide their expertise of the collection or services we provide, maybe even a recommendation on your next read.

Library programming, like Loop Lounge Crochet Club and our A.M./P.M. Book Discussions, create opportunities to connect with others who share your interests. They foster a sense of belonging that makes the library a true community space.

Everyone is welcome

I once read a book – borrowed from the Joliet Public Library, naturally – about hygge and how to create it at home. One suggestion stood out: Keep extra chairs at your table or in your home so unexpected (but welcome) guests feel like part of the family.

The Joliet Public Library strives to provide that same welcoming spirit. Regardless of your age, background, income or any other label, our doors are open to you. The Joliet community in particular has strong ties to its library, many of us remembering visiting with our parents or grandparents.

It’s about a shared sense of home, and we aim to create inclusive and inviting spaces where we all belong. A warm hug on a cold day.

So if you are feeling January blues, step inside the library. Feel the peaceful atmosphere. Embrace the cozy and calm. Unplug and enjoy. In the world of hygge and libraries, it’s not just about the books – it’s about the joy of belonging.
