A Joliet man was apprehended on charges alleging he fired a gun multiple times at a vehicle in 2023 in a road rage incident on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago.
On Monday, Kenneth Curry, 22, was taken into custody by agents with the FBI and the Illinois State Police on a charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Curry’s arrest was the result of an investigation of a shooting reported about 4:20 p.m. Nov. 13, 2023 on the Dan Ryan Expressway, according to a statement from Illinois State police.
“[Curry] reportedly fired a weapon at the victim’s vehicle. The victim’s vehicle was struck multiple times but the victims were not injured,” police said.
Curry has been charged with the shooting in Cook County.
Aggravated discharge of a firearm is a class 1 felony that is punishable by four to 15 years in prison.
Since 2019, shootings on expressways in the state have trended downward since their peak in 2021, according to the Illinois State Police data dashboard.
The number of shootings declined from 310 in 2021 to 89 in 2024.
Illinois State Police have credited the use of automated license plate readers, the expansion of their air operations unit and their collaborations with other law enforcement agencies with reducing the number of expressway shootings.
“The use of [Illinois State Police air operations] and automated license plate Readers has been a game changer in identifying and tracking those committing crime, as well as reducing crashes,” police officials said in a news release on Jan. 15.
There have been 918 shootings on expressways since 2019 and 63 deaths from those shootings.
