Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox recently received a three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
The three-star rating was for Silver Cross’ patient care and “outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting procedures,” according to a news release from Silver Cross Hospital.
This three-star rating “denotes the highest category of quality,” and places Silver Cross Hospital “among the elite for heart bypass surgery” in the U.S. and Canada,” according to the release.

Silver Cross Hospital launched its heart surgery program in May 2019, opened a $22 million cardiac expansion program in 2021 and opened its Outpatient Heart and Vascular Center in 2024.
Michael Mutterer, Silver Cross president and CEO, said in the release that this three-star rating is “the second major award our heart surgery program has earned since October, when Healthgrades ranked Silver Cross No. 2 for Cardiac Surgery in Illinois.”
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons star rating system is “one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care.
The rating is based on “benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery programs across the United States and Canada” and is calculated by “using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participant,” according to the release.
Dr. David M. Shahian, chair of the Task Force on Quality Measurement, said in the release that “only a very small percentage of participants nationally achieve this important recognition.”
