5 things to do in Will County: music, food and a whole lot of walking

This week’s top 5 include Concerts on the Hill, Food Truck Fridays, walking tour, farmer’s marketing and a special VFW celebration

1. The 47th annual “Concerts On The Hill” returns to the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and Theatre in Joliet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Concerts of the Hill” is a free, weekly concert on Thursday nights and will run through Aug. 26.

Features for opening night include Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk as emcee and Nick Thomas, organist and music director at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet, performing the national anthem. Other entertainment includes vocalist Lexi Rae Smith as well as Ebony and Ivory (keyboard artist and vocalist duo).

2. The Forest Preserve District of Will County is bringing back its popular Food Truck Fridays starting this Friday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Hammel Woods, Crumby Recreation Area in Shorewood. Lineup includes Tacos Maui, Rogue Curbside Kitchen and Nothing Bundt Cakes. Come out and enjoy good food and natural terrain.

3. On Saturday, burn those extra calories at 10 a.m. by taking a 90-minute walking tour of the downtown Joliet area while learning about its unique architectural history.

The Joliet Area Historical Museum is hosting the program in partnership with the Joliet Public Library. The program is $10. Registration is required.

4. Get out and walk some more on Sunday at the Plainfield Farmer’s Market, which is located at the corner of Route 59 and Lockport Street in Plainfield. The event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit Historic Plainfield Farmers Market on Facebook.

5. Finally, join in a patriotic celebration on Sunday when the Cantigny Post #367 VFW commemorates its 100th anniversary. Doors open at noon. The program begins at 1 p.m.

The first part of the event includes dinner, membership recognition, dancing and entertainment by Sweet Reminders, which will play yesterday’s hits. The cost is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Buy your tickets at the post, which is located at 826 Horseshoe Drive in Joliet.

From 4 to 8 p.m., Shindig will perform the rock hits of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s outside. The cost is free and you must bring your own chair.
