You know how it goes. Everyone in your group wants to order carryout, but no one can decide what to order. That’s why I recommend Johnny’s Beef & Gyros in Joliet.
The restaurant has so many choices, each person in your party should find something they like.
Its website said, “Our Chicago street food classics include recipes that have been carried on through generations. Our mission is to satisfy our customers with quality food and service.”
Sounded good to us.
So for starters, we chose five mozzarella sticks for $4.79. These arrived hot, crunchy and nicely seasoned on the outside.
We also ordered 15 white cheddar cheese nuggets for $4.99. They too arrived warm and delicious with a nice outer crisp.
And we picked 10 onion rings for $4.79. These were great: hot and crispy on the outside, hot and tender on the inside.
The gyro platter duo ($10.99) came with an original gyro and chicken gyro, warm pita bread, cucumber (tzatziki) sauce, onion, tomato, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, fries and cole slaw.
The person who ate the platter said it was the perfect meal after a long day at work. The gyro meat was cut really thin and well-seasoned with crispy edges. The fries were seasoned really well, too.
“I can 100% say that when I go back to this restaurant, I will absolutely be ordering the gyro platter again,” this person said.
The chicken pita, for $6.29 and an additional $3.99 for extra chicken, was tender and flavorful and “so delicious I wished I had more,” said the person who enjoyed it. The cucumber sauce was a nice complement.
The poor boy cost $6.79, plus $1 for mozzarella cheese. The meat was so appetizing that this diner craved more. The sandwich also featured lots of cheese and onions.
The grilled cheese with bacon cost $5.39. We paired it with a large order of fries for $3.29. The bread was nice and toasty, with plenty of bacon, and it was pleasingly cheesy.
The side order of fries with this sandwich arrived hot and salty, just the way we like them.
The Chicago-style double dog for $4.99 had these options: mustard, relish, onion, tomato, pickle, sport pepper and celery salt. The picky eater in our group ordered the double dog with just mustard, onion, tomato and pickle.
The double dog came exactly as ordered, piping hot and tasty, with just the right balance of toppings.
Finally, one in our group ordered a 20-ounce chocolate malt shake for $4.99. This was rich and delicious and not overly sweet.
