Plainfield Boy Scout earns Eagle rank

McGwire Andrew Holman created sensory stations at the Pilcher Park Nature Center

McGwire Andrew Holman was never a Cub Scout.

So when he became a Scout in March 2013, he had to earn 25 merit badges and organize and carry out a community project in order to earn the rank of Eagle, said his parents, Chris and Susie Holman.

McGwire Holman attained that rank April 30, his parents said. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, Holman’s Eagle Scout ceremony will be held in the future, they said.

For his Eagle project. McGwire Holman designed, built and installed four sensory stations for visitors at along the path at the Joliet Park District’s Pilcher Park Nature Center. The stations include touch, sound, texture and drawing, Chris and Susie Holman said

The project required 298 hours of service for “his troop, his family and himself,” the Holmans said.

In addition to the sensory stations project, McGwire Holman also served as chaplain aide and instructor for his troop, Boy Scout Troop 19 of Plainfield. He also participated in the Scouts’ Sea Base program and spent a week aboard a 40-foot sailing vessel in the Florida Keys, the Holmans said.

McGwire Holman is graduate of Minooka Community High School and a musical theater major at Western Illinois University.
