Asa Cooper scored a touchdown on his first three carries and finished with four TDs Thursday night to help lead Coal City to a 34-6 win over Illinois Central Eight Conference rival Lisle.
Cooper scored on runs of 9, 46 and 51 yards in the first quarter as the Coalers built a 20-0 lead. The Coalers (3-0) allowed their first points of the season when Lisle’s Michael Walker scored on a 2-yard run with 2:41 to play in the second quarter. Coal City then drove 67 yards, and sophomore quarterback Keegan Crater hit Cooper with a 13-yard scoring pass with 12.1 seconds to play in the first half.
Cooper finished with 155 yards on 14 carries, while teammate Nick Seplak had 33 yards and a touchdown on six attempts. Crater completed 3 of 5 passes for 58 yards.
Ashton Harvey led the stingy Coal City defense with 14 tackles, including five for loss, and recovered a fumble. Brady Best also recovered a fumble and had eight tackles, as did Cooper.
Peotone 28, Manteno 0: At Peotine, TJ Chenoweth rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, Ben Balmer led a stingy defensive effort, and the Blue Devils pitched a shutout in ICE action.
Balmer also rushed 15 times for 85 yards and a TD. Defensively, he recorded one of Peotone’s three sacks and finished with 10 tackles on the night.
Wilmington 26, Reed-Custer 21: At Reed-Custer, the Wildcats improved to 3-0, while dropping the Comets to 1-2 in the ICE contest.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Joliet Catholic 2, Lincoln-Way West 0: At Lincoln-Way West, Jillian Gray rang up eight kills, nine digs and eight service points, including three aces, as the Angels continued their winning ways with a 25-12, 25-7 victory in a nonconference match.
It was the fourth straight win for JCA (5-3), whose other contributors included Emily Surin (four kills, 10 points, two aces, two digs, one block); Kristen Leuszler (seven points, two aces, one block); Ryan Hinshaw (seven assists, one kill); Izzy Horkey (five assists, six points, one ace, three digs); Crystal Galaviz (two kills), Alexis Mines (one kill, three digs); Natalie Kent (five digs); Bella Dixon (five digs); Lily Ray (one kill); and Cameron Batis (one dig).
The Angels have served 18 aces in their past two wins, including nine against both Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way West.
Lincoln-Way West’s Taylor Schlinger and Emma Young had six and four digs, respectively. Bella Been led the Knights in kills with four.
Andrew 2, Lincoln-Way Central 1: At Andrew, the Thunderbolts rallied for a 26-24, 22-25, 25-13 win in Southwest Suburban Conference action.
Lincoln-Way Central (1-7, 0-1) was led by Caitlyn Rochon (nine aces, 10 digs ) and Nicole Connolly (five kills, 12 digs, one block).
Coal City 2, Lisle 0: At Lisle, the Coalers won the Illinois Central Eight match, 25-19, 25-17, as Macaya Garner tallied 16 assists, two aces and two kills.
Mia Rodriguez and Molly Stiles added five kills apiece for Coal City (2-4), while Hayleigh Roach had four kills. Jayda Mills (three aces, three kills, nine service points) and Grace Norris (four service points, one ace, one kill) also contributed to the win.
Romeoville 2, Plainfield Central 0: At Romeoville, the host Spartans captured a 25-22, 25-16 decision in Southwest Prairie action.
Plainfield Central (2-2) was led by Kerrigan Candra’s eight kills and 10 digs, while teammate Kinsey Bakhaus rang up five kills, seven assists and 13 digs. The Wildcats’ other contributors included Kailey Fearday (two aces), Maddy Brock (seven assists), Hannah O’Brien (15 digs) and Riley Cleghorn (two blocks).
Gardner-South Wilmington 2, Grace Christian 1: At Grace Christian, Hannah Frescura tallied seven kills, seven aces, 18 assists and nine digs, and the Panthers pulled out a 25-12, 22-25, 25-15 decision in River Valley Conference action.
Gardner-South Wilmington (6-2, 6-1) also got contributions from Colby Grieff (six kills, five digs), Abby Beck (four kills, two aces, four digs, two assists) and Kylie Hawks (four kills, two assists, eight digs).
BOYS SOCCER
Lincoln-Way Central 4, Lincoln-Way West 2: At Lincoln-Way West, a pair of goals by Josh Lucchetti helped the Knights win the Southwest Suburban Conference match.
Johnny Roussakis and Eddie Rafacz also scored for Central (4-2, 4-2). Roussakis also had an assist, as did Brandon Mellen and Dylan Alfonso. Ryan Marszalak recorded the win in goal.
Minooka 6, Plainfield Central 5: At Minooka, the Indians won a high-scoring affair in Southwest Prairie Conference action as Ben Joder scored twice and added an assist.
Zac Monnett had a goal and an assist for Minooka (6-2, 6-2), which also got tallies from Diego Escobedo, Tyler Colwell and Ben Wolcott. Manny Campuzano and Esteban Torres also had assists.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Lincoln-Way West 8, Bradley-Bourbonnais 7: At Bradley, Lea Moeller scored three goals to lead the Warriors to the win.
Sydney McGann added a pair of goals for Lincoln-Way West, and Amelia Dellamano and Teagan Zack each had one. Moeller also had three saves, and Madalyn Witt recorded five stops.
