A child who was seen dangling from the second-story balcony of a New Lenox apartment was hospitalized when suspicions arose that she had gotten into her mother’s drugs, police said.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, an officer was sent to a Shagbark Court apartment “in reference to a child hanging from a second-floor apartment balcony,” the New Lenox police said in a statement released Monday.

The caller had helped the child down by the time the officer arrived, police said, but after assessing the situation, the officer “believed that the child had ingested an illegal controlled substance that was located in her mother’s bedroom.”

The New Lenox police declined to provide the age of the child or to specify the “illegal controlled substance” it was believed she may have ingested.

Whatever it may have been, illegal controlled substance was apparently dangerous enough for police to determine the child required medical attention, as she was “transported to the hospital, treated and turned over to another family member.”

The child’s mother, 35-year-old Melissa Abramowicz, was arrested on probable cause of possession of a controlled substance and endangering the health or life of a child, records show.

Abramowicz was transported to the Will County jail and booked into custody Friday afternoon, but posted $7,500 bond for her release the following night, records show.

Court records showed no criminal charges had been filed against Abramowicz in connection with the incident through Monday afternoon.
