Joliet area could see up to three inches of snow tonight

The National Weather Service said it expects between one and three inches of snow in the Joliet area Tuesday night.

The snow began falling in the area shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to Todd Kluber, a meteorologist at the NWS Forecast Chicago Office located in Romeoville.

Kluber said the area was seeing moderate to briefly heavy snowfall which was expected to last until around 7 or 8 p.m.

He added the area could also see one to two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation overnight.

Throughout the night into Wednesday morning, temperatures are expected to rise somewhat to where the snow would turn into rainfall by daybreak.

Despite the slight warmup to a high of about 36 degrees, Kluber said another cold front should come through starting in the late morning which would cause temperatures to dip below freezing again.

Still, the rain is expected to stop by about late morning, though some snow mix is possible.

This is the first notable winter weather event of the season, Kluber noted, which is a “little late” compared to most years.

Kluber said as with any bad winter weather, it’s especially important for drivers to be cautious on the roadways and give themselves extra time when making trips.
