Coroner: Lyons teen visiting Romeoville preserve dies from possible drowning

A 19-year-old man who was visiting a Will County Forest Preserve facility in Romeoville apparently drowned Wednesday, the Will County Coroner’s Office said.

David Nelson of Lyons was was found in the Des Plaines River near the Isle a la Cache Museum.

He was pronounced dead at the AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Bolingbrook about 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release.

The incident occurred at about 1:10 p.m.

Forest preserve district police received a call from staff at the Isle a la Cache Museum about a missing patron, district spokeswoman Cindy Cain said.

Forest preserve police and other agencies came to the scene to search. About an hour later, they found Nelson in the nearby Des Plaines River, and he was taken to the Bolingbrook hospital, Cain said.

The Will County Forest Preserve Police Department is investigating the death.

The coroner’s office performed an autopsy Thursday and found the preliminary cause of death was drowning. The final cause and manner of death will be determined after the final review of police, autopsy and toxicological reports.
