Vasa Fitness opening delayed in Joliet

The opening of Vasa Fitness in Joliet was delayed from an expected Saturday opening because of building inspection issues.

The new fitness center in the North Ridge Plaza instead will open Tuesday, a spokesperson said Monday evening.

Vasa Fitness remodeled 60,000 square feet of space formerly occupied by an Ultra Foods supermarket into a fitness facility with swimming pool, basketball court, fitness machines, studio rooms and more.

The company, which has 50 fitness centers in seven states, had announced a grand opening for Saturday and provided a tour of the facility on Friday to media, the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Mayor Bob O’Dekirk.

Vasa learned after the Friday event that it would not be able to open on Saturday, said spokesperson Jaime Cottini.

Building inspection issues were resolved Monday, and Vasa Fitness will open at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Cottini said.

North Ridge Plaza is located at Larkin Avenue and Theodore Street.
